Clematis cirrhosa 'Freckles' - Winter EVERGREEN FOLIAGE AND SCENTED FLOWERS. RHS Award of Garden Merit. This Hardy Evergreen Climber has been container grown so can be planted at any time of the year.
This Clematis 'Freckles' is a great plant for winter interest as it flowers through the winter season when the garden needs an injection of colour. Clematis 'Freckles' bears creamy white, pendulous flowers, which have dark red spots on the inside of the petals. This attractive, vigorous cultivar was raised by (I hope he doesn't mind the accolade!) the 'Clematis Supremo' Raymond Evison, from wild seed collected in the Balearic Islands, and named after one of his daughters whose nickname is Freckles. It has scented single, nodding, creamy pink flowers with reddish maroon speckling on the insides of the tepals. Each tepal is 4 - 5cm (1.5 - 2in) long.
The RHS Floral Committee awarded Clematis 'Freckles' an Award of Garden Merit and described it as:"Large evergreen climber with neat, finely-cut leaves tinged bronze in winter. Flowers 5 cm wide, pale yellow heavily speckled with maroon within. Good silky seed-heads." Clematis 'Freckles' is best grown in full sun or partial shade and only needs a light pruning after flowering to tidy this absolute gem of a climbing plant. A good source of nectar for the early bumble bees.
