Clematis 'Rubens' - Hundreds and Thousands of Sweet Vanilla Blooms! RHS AGM. This Hardy Perennial Climber has been container grown so can be planted at any time of the year. We despatch WITH container so roots are protected.
Clematis montana 'Rubens' has hundreds if not thousands of heavenly sweet vanilla scented blooms en masse in May and June. This 'Mile-a-Minute' climbing vine is a dense growing climber smothered with rosy-mauve light to dark pink flowers holding richly coloured gold stamens at their centre. Selected for its uniqueness and performance Clematis 'Rubens' was given 'The Award of Garden Merit' (AGM), and rightly so! Given the name 'Montana' by our Greek ancestors, meaning "of the mountains", this vine originates from the Himalayas and Central and Western China! The flowers alone are not the plant's only asset - the foliage performs brilliantly for you too! The new leaves have a wonderful rich plum tint that matures to a bronzed rich dark green, creating a colouful, lush backdrop which accentuates the unbelievable masses of fresh spring flowers. Clematis 'Rubens' will grow well for you in full sun or partial shade. This clematis is ideal for covering walls, trellis or growing through larger trees and shrubs. Clematis 'Rubens' being fully hardy and a very stong growing climber is perfect for screening, and remember to prune only to tidy as this vine flowers on the previous years growth.
'Rubens' is sometimes referred to as the 'Red Anemone Clematis' having irresistible anemone shaped blossoms. Beautiful and strong Clematis 'Rubens' is one of the most floriferous early spring flowering vines grown and really does deserve its Award of Garden Merit - choose a location close to a window where you can sit back and enjoy its changing beauty up close.
